Full story
Lately I have been feeling old fashioned, wishing for the days of old. Not the awkward teenage years, but the days of my youth. When calling someone on the phone meant that they would call you back. Maybe not immediately, they could be out, but inevitably, they would call.
I want to know when it became culturally acceptable to not call (or write, for that matter) someone back.
It hasn’t gotten more difficult to stay in touch, quite the contrary in fact. That is the most disturbing part. It is like a blatant “I don’t want to talk to you and/or value your time”, but quieter. Now, I understand that sometimes people forget, which happens to everyone. There is not a forgetting epidemic in our country though, and I really don’t think it is acceptable. What surprises me more is how many people do think that it is. If someone doesn’t call you back repeatedly, you take the hint, however, why are people so spineless that they can’t have common courtesy to just say they aren’t interested or return a call? I know this post is whiny, contrary to my anti-whining goals, but this has been brewing for a long time, and someone needs to address it. How can we fix this problem, or are communications doomed?
